This is a well-balanced wine with fresh redcurrant and wild strawberry-fruit flavours, and a smooth texture. It was nice with a peppered steak.

A deliciously fruity white with notes of citrus and melon flavours of Chenin Blanc with tropical peach notes from Viognier.

A blend of the classic Grenache and Carignan, with a little Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah too. You pick up raisins, black plums, chocolate, blackberries, and cassis. Having spent 12 months in oak, it is complimented with notes of vanilla and cinnamon. Absolutely delicious.

If only more decent wines came in half bottles. This is, by far, one of the best you'll be lucky to get your hands on, so if you're willing to splurge (£18), it's worth it just to sample the richness, balance, and elegant texture of this wine from one of California's greatest producers.

I had to look up the grapes in this wine because I'd never heard of Frascati. It's a blend of Trebbiano, Greco and Malvasia grapes. Apparently, if there is a wine that is synonymous with Rome, it is Frascati. It has been produced in the countryside around Rome for almost two thousand years. either a dry or a sweet style and either still or in a Spumante (sparkling) style. Flavour-wise, it's an interesting blend of citrus fruit and nut. £5.69 from Waitrose.
